A Sensescape of Innovation: Inside IFF’s Hyderabad GBS Hub

Redefining Experience: IFF’s Legacy in Innovation

International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) has been redefining the way we experience taste, scent, and wellness for over a century. With an innovative spirit at the intersection of science and creativity, IFF crafts flavors, fragrances, and bioscience solutions that draw inspiration from nature and are brought to life through deep expertise and passion. With a mission to spread joy through science, creativity, and heart, the company tirelessly pushes the envelope of innovation while upholding its core values of curiosity, care, and collaboration. IFF aims not just to create delightful products but also to enhance wellness, sustainability, and the overall human experience.

The Hyderabad GBS Hub: Designing Purpose into Space

When IFF new Global Business Services (GBS) hub in Hyderabad was envisioned, the goal was to create more than a workplace—it was to build a space that brings its purpose to life. Spanning a generous 75,000 square feet and designed to host up to 600 employees, the centre unites business development, finance, IT, and shared service teams under one roof. Conceived as an innovation anchor for the region, it moves beyond traditional back-office functions to foster collaboration, agility, and growth. Every design choice- from zoning to materiality, was shaped to reflect IFF’s unique balance of imagination and science, transforming its culture and innovation ethos into a tangible experience. The result is a workplace that nurtures well-being, connection, and a shared sense of belonging. In a world where workplace culture matters more than ever, IFF is leading the way, creating spaces that resonate with their purpose and transform how their teams connect and collaborate.

The Sensescape — A Journey Beyond Flavors

At IFF, flavour creation extends far beyond taste. Rooted in layered sensory perception, this philosophy became the starting point for the workplace design. The resulting concept of a Sensescape reimagines the office as a spatial journey through a series of distinct yet interconnected environments. Conceived as a journey beyond flavours, the workplace immerses users in a full sensory experience. As one moves through the space, the Sensescape unfolds gradually, evoking memories, emotions, and associations with specific places and moments.

Shaping the Sensescape Experience

Moving away from the conventional office layout, the workplace unfolds as a sequence of landscapes that shape how people move, interact, and experience the space. Each environment forms part of a larger spatial narrative, guiding users through distinct settings that support different modes of work:

Ocean : Anchors the arrival experience, bringing together the reception and café as vibrant social spaces

Islands : Collaborative zones that encourage spontaneous exchange and teamwork.

Oasis : Agile areas designed for quick discussions, stand-up meetings, and informal interactions.

Forests : Meeting rooms intended for more structured conversations and deeper dialogue.

Caverns : Quiet retreats that provide spaces for focused and concentrated work.

Plains : Open workstation areas where everyday activity and team productivity unfold.

Peaks : The boardroom and executive zone, positioned as the culmination of the journey and representing perspective, leadership, and decision-making.

The Sensescape is translated into design through a series of carefully composed sensory transitions that shape how the workplace is experienced. Variations in light, material character, spatial openness, and the integration of natural elements create subtle distinctions between zones while guiding movement across the floorplate. These shifts introduce rhythm into the workspace, allowing it to transition fluidly between moments of interaction, focus, and pause. Complemented by cues such as scent, tactile comfort, and environmental graphics, the design enriches the sensory experience, creating a workplace that feels intuitive, immersive, and engaging.

The Arrival Sequence

The experience of the Sensescape begins at a dynamic central core that anchors the workplace. A large green wall further defines this space, introducing a strong biophilic presence at the heart of the workplace. Acting as both a visual landmark and a calming natural element, it reinforces the sensory character of the environment while setting the tone for the journey that unfolds beyond.

This arrival zone houses the main reception and features a striking internal staircase that connects the two primary floors. More than a circulation element, the staircase serves as a sculptural centrepiece, seamlessly integrating seating and subtly reinforcing the brand identity. It establishes a strong visual and spatial link across the facility, creating a multifunctional, memorable, and engaging entry experience.

From this central node, the workplace branches outward into its various functional zones. The staircase becomes a key connective element, linking amenities, collaborative areas, workspaces, and meeting rooms across both levels. Circulation paths radiate from the core, creating intuitive movement throughout the office while maintaining visual continuity between spaces.

Inclusive Circulation and Access

The circulation strategy is designed to create an inclusive and intuitive workplace experience for both local and global employees. While resident teams have access to the full range of amenities across the facility, movement for global employees is thoughtfully guided toward shared zones such as collaborative areas, work lounges, and social spaces. This ensures that everyone engaging with the workplace can easily access key amenities and participate in the social and collaborative life of the office. By structuring circulation in this way, the design balances operational efficiency with inclusivity, creating a workplace where all employees can navigate the environment comfortably and enjoy a seamless, engaging experience.

The Experience Center: Showcasing Global Innovation

Positioned along the primary arrival sequence and directly connected to the central reception, the Experience Center forms an important extension of the workplace narrative. Conceived as a dedicated space for showcasing innovation, it provides a platform where the organization’s global portfolio can be shared, explored, and experienced. Equipped with advanced audiovisual capabilities, the space supports interactive demonstrations, presentations, and product launches that connect teams across geographies. Its flexible design allows it to function both as a collaborative engagement space and as a setting for curated displays.

Beyond its technical role, the Experience Center also serves as a cultural touchpoint within the workplace. Products and innovations are thoughtfully showcased, allowing employees to engage with the breadth of the company’s work in a tangible way. In doing so, the space reinforces a shared understanding of the organization’s global presence while creating an environment where innovation can be experienced rather than simply presented.

A Diverse Ecosystem of Work

Extending outward from the energetic central core, the workplace transitions into the primary work zones where the daily rhythm of activity unfolds. The office is organized into distinct work zones, each functioning as a self-sufficient environment that supports multiple modes of work. Within every zone, focus desks are complemented by collaborative spaces, respite areas, and meeting rooms, allowing employees to move easily between individual tasks, discussions, and moments of pause while remaining within their immediate team setting.

For more structured conversations, enclosed meeting rooms provide environments suited for deeper dialogue and team collaboration. Dedicated quiet retreats offer spaces for uninterrupted concentration, supported by acoustic privacy and subdued lighting. Together, these varied settings create a balanced workplace ecosystem that supports both collaboration and focused work throughout the day.

Global Collaboration and Leadership Spaces

To support the needs of a globally connected organization, the workplace integrates multifunctional boardrooms, work cafés, and executive lounges that accommodate international teams and leadership engagements. Positioned along key circulation routes, these spaces ensure easy access while maintaining a balanced separation from the primary work zones, allowing global employees to engage with the workplace without disrupting the daily rhythm of resident teams.

Equipped with advanced audiovisual connectivity, the boardrooms enable seamless global meetings and strategic discussions, while adjacent work cafés and executive lounges provide more informal settings for conversation, networking, and collaborative exchange. Together, these environments support both formal decision-making and casual interaction, creating a cohesive framework for leadership engagement within the broader workplace.

Sustainability and Wellbeing

Sustainability and wellbeing are central to the Hyderabad GBS hub, reflecting a design approach that balances operational efficiency with human experience. The workplace integrates green building certifications, resource-efficient systems, and human-centric design to create an environment that is both environmentally responsible and supportive of employees’ needs.
